Many publications have reported that health professionals are putting patients at risk through not applying cricoid pressure consistently or correctly. The application of cricoid pressure, also known as the Sellick Maneuver, stops gastric regurgitation from reaching the lungs in patients being intubated.
When performed correctly, cricoid pressure can help proper tracheal tube placement. Cricoid pressure is also recommended during mask ventilation during CPR to reduce gastric distension and consequential regurgitation. Now students and health professionals can properly train to use this technique more successfully.
The electronic monitor displays correct and incorrect hand placement continuously showing the amount of force being applied to the cricoid cartilage, and has a timer. Most health professionals are surprised by the amount of force required and the difficulty in maintaining that force over time to apply cricoid pressure correctly.
